I met a friend a couple of months ago and I introduced her to Myers Briggs profiles. I told her I was INTJ and share with her a few of the common characteristics us INTJ have, including some of the internet memes which I have to say, some are hillarious apart from being 100% on spot. Some of them aren't though, and it's the ones regarding Fictional INTJs.
I felt really honored that some fictional characters are INTJ, but at the same time felt insulted the some were labeled as INTJ, but I honestly disagree with that association. It is on this that I will like to expand today.
Dexter Morgan (from Dexter).
Several websites and internet memes label Dexter as INTJ. I watched Dexter for the good part of the first four seasons, then got tired of how the main character storyline went. Mostly because Dexter started as INTJ on season 1: he's ruthless, he's methodic, he has that sexual awkwardness with Rita, he has no regard for human life, and so on. As the series progresses, it seems that Dexter somehow keeps forgetting the strategic pattern that got him where he was on season 1. He begins making bad decisions, he improvises more than what he plans, he keeps screwing up on the basic stuff... it all turns out into a mess for him.
That's why most TV fans, cannot believe everything they see on TV. Normally, people's personality don't change in such a drastic way. With Dexter, it was as if he went from INTJ to something like an INFJ or INTP... or some bizarre weird 17th personality that would be "INT-NOT J". All of a sudden, Dexter has killing buddies, becomes this loving and caring father, dresses like an idiot, and gets hooked up with emo girlfriends. An INTJ would NEVER do any of those.
He does have "The Death Stare", I'll give you that. But an INTJ has both the stare and the behavior that goes along with the stare.
Walter White aka Heisenberg (from Breaking Bad)
Walter White is perhaps the biggest misconception of an INTJ. I agree that Walter manipulates everyone around him, is sort of cold and distant, not to mention quiet to his own personal matters. He has 99 out of 100 characteristics an INTJ has. But that one missing, is one that has A LOT of weight to label him as an INTJ: He keeps hanging out with Jesse!!
If you watch this video:
You'll listen to Annette say "of course we like socializing, we just like socialzing with smart people. Unfortunately, most people are not". See ? That is a REAL INTJ speaking. So, under that logic, if us INTJ like socializing with smart people, imagine what kind of people do you think us INTJ would like to be with? I'll give you a clue: SMART PEOPLE. I'll give you another clue: we sincerely DISLIKE, we truly HATE to work with dumb people.
That brings me to Walter and Jesse? Why does Walter keep working and socializing with Jesse? Jesse is an idiot! An idiot with a good heart (or whatever), but still, an idiot! There is NO WAY an INTJ would tolerate with Jesse's antics, behavior, incompetence and childish mind. In fact, an INTJ would have killed Jesse, just to be safe and protect himself from any loose ends. So Walter ends being like some sort of INTA, or INTB, or INTMP-idiot sort of type, but definitely not an INTJ. Gus Fring said it best when they met for the first time: "You have poor judgement".
Again, like with Dexter, Walter has "The Death Stare", and once again I'll give you that. But... like with Dexter, Walter's action don't follow through.
Tyrion Lannister (from Game of Thrones)
I'm sorry GOT fans, but Tyrion is not an INTJ.
Do you know that saying "the devil is a genius, but it's more because of how old he is, rather than how smart he is"? That's exactly what applies to Tyrion.
Tyrion has most of the characteristics that would fool anyone to make them think he is an INTJ... but in the end, he's not. Just because a guy makes plans, good plans, well-thought plans, doesn't necessarily mean that person is an INTJ. Just because someone makes ruthless cold decisions, doesn't automatically imply that person is an INTJ.
Oh and just so you know, Tywin is not an INTJ either.
Gandalf
Actually I have no idea what kind of personality Gandalf is. He's some sort of mixture between INTJ, INTP, ISTJ, ISFJ and some ENTP maybe?
Again, Gandalf doesn't think things through. Pretty much like Tyrion and Tywin, Gandalf is able to achieve what he does in LOTR because of his experience and his powers, but not because he's an INTJ.
In my following entry, I will post fictional characters who truly are INTJ.
Stay tuned.
